Bulldogs are very special dogs that require special attention and care.  They are not an easy breed to have and most Bulldog breeders and owners alike agree that they are not fit for a novice dog owner.

If you'd like a dog to go for long walks or help motivate you to go jogging  or cycling, a Bulldog is not the right breed for you.  Bulldogs do need exercise at regular intervals but they aren't the frisbee dog or hiking dog you might be thinking about.  You should be able to foresee the right length of the walk or you may end up carrying your 50 pound dog all the way back home!  Typically, a Bulldog, at first, will run like a Greyhound for about 50 yards, then put their bellies flat on the ground, all four feet stretched out to catch their breath and cool off. Very funny!

Bulldog is an indoor dog.  They should not be left alone outside for long periods of time.  Some Bulldogs may have breathing issues due to the specific structure of their face and nose and are very intolerant to heat. If you live in a very warm climate, your Bulldog will need an air-conditioned room when the temperature becomes too hot.  They don't have cold weather coats and so should be kept inside in cold climates, as well.

Unlike their short coat may suggest, Bulldogs need regular grooming and care.  Their eyes and wrinkles, for example, need to be cleaned daily and the area underneath their tail must be cleaned often and monitored for irritation, which can lead to infections in some cases. They are easy to care for and will willingly let you groom them if you make it a bonding experience with you and your family.

Last, but not least, Bulldogs need attentive owners because their strong will and lengendary courage (once used to fight bulls) make them rarely  complain. Bulldogs rarely whine because they need something. It is up to you, the owner, to always check that your Bulldog has everything he needs for his/her well being.
